On the outside of these tires at the top of the bead is a narrow soft ring used for sealing. That's the only difference between tube and tubeless otherwise they work fine on a split lock ring rim. The tubes are getting harder to find except for tractors that use the same size tire, and those tubes won't work on these tires. If he absolutely can't find the right tube, he could use 900-16 radial tubes.
