i have had the pick up tube in the tank rust off and become short enough that when the tank would run down a few gallons from full the fuels would pick up suck air! I had to make a ew pick up tube, modern gas will retain moisture in addition to tank sweat, thus a partially full tank sitting for long periods can cause rust failure in the steel lines. in your case from your other posts regarding rust and frame troubles, i would bet the steel line has problems, look for wet areas along the line and frame especilly near the clips that hold the line on the frame.
