I think I have discovered the culprit.
This generator was unused by the previous owner who was a friend of mine. He gave it to me when he moved away from here a couple of years ago. Apparently when he bought it he also purchased a maintainer which was attached to the frame. I noticed today that the positive wire from the maintainer to the battery had a larger than necessary eyelet on the end where it connected to the positive terminal on the battery. There is a slight burn in the loop, which might indicate a brief contact with the hold-down clamp for the battery. The ground wire for the battery is larger than the ground wire in the harness so obviously the lighter wire would fail first. Hopefully this is the case, and no internal damage to the generator occurred. If so the fix is relatively simple.
