You are correct. More water does mean more brush and therefore more fuel for brush fires, and it does result in more mud slides. What most don't understand is that this sequence of cause and effect has been happening in California long before people had any influence. Thoughtful folks have finally realized that forest fires have been around as long as there have been forests, and it is fairly stupid for men to think that they will somehow control the forest or that it needs some type of management. My last house abutted state land and when you buy a house that is in an area that has a possibility of fire, you know it going in, and you know that is the price you may have to pay, but the real possibility is slight. My homeowner's insurance included the price for the chance of fire. The media only shows news, which is the fires, but it does not show the non-news, which is the 14.5 million homes which did not burn or had mud slide into them. Have you ever had a tornado hit your home? Maybe not, but it is possible, right. Or a bad snow storm could bring down power lines, starting a fire? Or, ... pick your poison. I bet that there is a greater chance of me being harmed in a crash in my Power Wagon than there is of me being harmed in a natural disaster. And my car insurance reflects that chance.
