You need to cut a chunk out of the frame and a maybe a smaller chunk out of the inner frame.
Do not go straight in but at an angle.
Do the inside repair firs, grind it down and then do the outside flange,
I suspect the reason it cracked was most of the weld was on the surface - if that is the cast the inside crack could be gouged out and welded with patching.
Overhead welding is a PITA, a bit like trying to stick drops of water to your ceiling.
