"most people don't even use them". Good point. Some people probably shouldn't use them. In an unexperienced persons hands they can be pretty dangerous.
I have owned a lot of trucks with winches. First one was in 1968. I thought trying to get stuck and them winching myself out was fun. I guess it was, then. :) We've always lived where I could cut wood for heat and the winches have served me well for pulling trees out of difficult places to make them into firewood.
I used to help an old stone-sculptor remove large granite rocks for his work.
They've also been helpful in recovering myself or others from slide-offs in snow.
Now, at almost 81, my three trucks have winches that proudly sit in semi retirement, and I drive so as not to have to use them for self-recovery. :)
