Chain drive from the diff to the wheels provided a fairly cheap and relatively reliable method of reduction ratio.
Chain also provided a simple way of driving an auxiliary rear axel before improved methods of heat treating and gear cutting provided gears of sufficient quality to develope interaxel gear boxes.
Chain drive came along a long time before the full floating axel was developed.
