Hi Sean,
You won't hurt the system by using it on wet or slippery surfaces, but these older systems are NOT to be confused with modern "full time" systems found on todays trucks and SUV's. It is all a matter of experience. I've seen old timers (me now, I guess!) drive, a stock Willys with military mud tires, in circles around new comers with monster tires, big engines and lift kits. It has more to do with the seat of the pants feel and experience than it does with equipment. If you feel unsure of your driving ability, then by all means engage your 4WD, but NOT on surfaces that will harm your truck. Pavement, dry surfaces, or tight turning areas are not suitable for 4WD. As for stopping better, 4 wheels will always stop better than two, are less prone to hydroplane and skid. BUT loss of control can still happen, don't rely on the 4WD to keep you out of trouble, learn your driving limitations and work on your skills. There is no substitute for experience so go out there and drive!
