NOT A PW BUT A DODGE XMISSION QUESTION

I have a 96 2wd 1500 with auto. Trans shifts good at times and at other times it will shift once and then at about 40mph you have to let off the gas completely and coast and it will shift. Sometimes it revs up and seems like it will never shift and then it will and clunks as it shifts. Once it does shift it usually shifts ok till you cut off motor and go through process again. Any ideas what might be the problem? At times I think it might be a sensor, trans is all computer controlled I think. Any help is appreciated.

By the way my daily driver is a '77 M880.
