Sounds pretty much identical to mine except I drilled several holes in the flange and use self tapping sheet metal screws to fasten it to the seal. So far all of the seals I have removed have been the completly closed type so metal fragments from the screws haven't been a problem. However, it seems that most of the ones I have bought new for a relacement have been open in back. I would be concerned about the metal fragments falling down around the double bearing when removing those. Welding it to the seal would elimintae that problem. I will try that next time.
