Head gasket Question

I have a head gasket leak and am going to replace the offending gasket. When replacing a head gasket on a 230 can you use shelac for a better seal or are you better off using the gasket as is?
I understand these gaskets are reusable ,if so any advice ? I have a gasket from annther engine that appears to be in perfect condition,I was considering using it if the wait was long for a replacement.
