First, I want to apologize to everyone for the way I posted this in the last forum. I gave the WRONG information and I should not have posted until I did some more research. I want to thank Gil (can’t remember your last name…sorry!) for pointing out where I went wrong and I hope I didn’t offend you. In the future I will research things like this more completely before sounding the alarm. Sorry!

In Senate bill S. 1766, authored by Senators Tom Daschle (D-SD) and Jeff Bingaman (D-NM), ‘Energy Policy Act of 2002’, one of our beloved senators has placed ‘Section 803’. This section is titled ‘ASSISTANCE FOR STATE PROGRAMS TO RETIRE FUEL-INEFFICIENT MOTOR VEHICLES.’ This section will provide federal funding to any state that wishes to start or continue a VOLUNTARY old car buy back program. I’m not sure which states already participate in these programs, but if there is the lure of federal funds, I’m sure more and more states will join in.

I’m positive that no one on this forum would sell their older vehicles back to the government; what worries me is that those ‘other’ folks that will. Because the bill has specific guidelines stating that the funding will be provided if the state plan “requires that all passenger automobiles and light-duty trucks turned in be scrapped”. This will deplete the number of good usable parts out in the economy making it more expensive and more time consuming to find used parts or parts cars.

The thing that scares me the most about this legislation is that the government has a habit of incrementally taking our freedoms (and our money) away. This bill COULD lead to mandatory turn in of vehicles that are considered ‘dirty’.

Please go to www.senate.gov, perform a search on S.1766, and look for and read Section 803. Then write your congressman, senator and anyone else that you can think of and demand that this section be removed.

More info can also be found at the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) web site www.sema.org or go to the following link http://preview.sema.org/content/?id=24916

Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) is one of the esteemed (cough, cough) senators from my state. He will be receiving a few e-mails from me.

Sorry for the long post Joe! I know that bandwidth is expensive.

Let’s get this bill changed!!
