I remembered that the transmissions for the US M37s are NOT all the same. The early ones with the captured shift lever use different synchro sets, and some of the bearings are different. I think they are all considered NP420s, but I could be wrong here. Later transmissions with the bayonet style shift lever retainer are full-on NP420s. Both transmissions have the same bolt pattern and bearing retainer dimensions, and are interchangeable between early and late trucks. I believe the PTOs will swap between these transmissions, but I'm not sure about that either. Dave Cirillo would know for sure.
