sorry, i have only worked on them with a hex head castle / lock nut, if you lived closer i would machine you a six tang socket to fit, it is under considerable preload plus it looks pretty weathered in place, it would be simple to make two tang wrench to engage the slots, weld one together and oil harden it...make a 3ft handle, you still might check with a reputable drive line / transmission gear shop, i would bet there is an actual too, is the center 1"? it probably is fine thread also. have fun!
