I personally would never squirt, pour, or dribble gasoline into the throat of a carburetor while turning an engine over. If the engine backfires trough the carb, well lest just assume you have your life insurance paid up...

I do however pour a little gas in the throat of a carb, replace the air cleaner, and set the container of gasoline well away from the truck and then (and only then) crank it over to see if it starts. The engine may run for a few revolutions and quit again. In which case I start all over - take off the air cleaner, pour a little gas in, replace air cleaner - rinse and repeat.

Keep in mind that by pouring gasoline directly into the carb the gasoline is not being atomized since air is not being drawn into the cylinders at the same time. It is very easy to get a flooded condition doing this.
