Saving Finish/Patina

I know nothing about paint or body work,only repairing and replacing parts on these trucks, but I'm curious as to what others use to preserve original paint and finish,even if thin or balmost bare. I don't care for fresh paint. Wondering if light hand sanding and a coat of some type of penetrating oil occasionally will do? MXIT
