it sounds like the driving gear on the transfer case is damaged even missing a tooth or two causing it the skip a pinched cable sleeve or tight bend in the cable will behave similarly its doubtful that its the speedo as you have tried a second one, the driving gear removes easily and mwm or vpw have nos replacements
