In addition to what others have said....With the factory flanges on the ends of the axles, the axles are always engaged when the truck is moving. Your axle will not be driven unless you shift the transfer case into 4 wheel drive. The main benefit of the lockout or freewheeling hubs is to reduce the movement of all of the interior parts of the axle. Some brands of lockout or freewheeling hubs are Warn, Selectro, Dual Matic, and others. The flanges that Vaughn posted are factory flanges that don't have splines to turn the axle when the truck is moving.
