Let me explain Free wheeling hubs came out to help the axles from turning when you did not need 4 wheel drive and when you needed you could install the splined hub for 4 wheel drive Then locking hubs came along and with a twist of the dial on the hub you could have have 4 wheel drive and a twist the other way and you can have 2 wheel drive a good improvement over the old way
