I have been told that oxy is a good way to weld cast iron due to the preheat required and ability to keep the whole part hot as it is being welded. That being said I prefer TIG and have never attempted to oxy or gas weld on any material. Oxy is likely the cheapest process to set up, especially if you already have a cutting torch but id imagine has a bit of a learning curve. There are still procedures used that specifically call out torch welding for hardfacing and some other high carbon alloys, again likely for the heating and interpass temp. requirements. For most applications TIG has replaced oxy and MIG is mostly for high production rates depending on shielding gas and wire selection. Shielded metal or stick will likely always have it place for outdoor, less than optimal surface conditions, or in places where a MIG gun or TIG torch will not physically fit.

I have a few oxy welding tips that I mostly use for heating nuts and bolts in tight spots. I don't even braze with a torch, I use TIG for that too.
