I remember reading that procedure written by Charles Talbert at M-Series rebuild, but on a different forum, and I think it was a more recent post than the one you cited. 100 ft-lbs seems like an a lot, but Charles has rebuilt and restored at least many dozens, if not hundreds, of these old Power Wagons and related trucks, and his reputation for excellent quality is well-known, so I figure he knows what he's doing. If it's good enough for him, it should be good enough for me. Having said this, I haven't driven my truck since then to personally vouch for the reliability of this approach.
