Acetylene gas is Gen1 welding and mainly applied to steel and cast iron, although you can weld aluminum with it if you know how. MIG and TIG are the later Gen’s and produce less contamination in the weld and do an easier job of welding aluminum however it requires more cleaning of the host material prior to welding. MIG is a good choice for thinner steel and cast iron and TIG is better for thicker metals and stainless steel. Both MIG and TIG can be used to weld copper and titanium, and MIG is better for thinner stock for clean welds with no splatter.

My ex-brother-in-law was a certified aircraft mechanic that repair steel tube frame aircraft and he used a MIG.
