My wife and I visited the museum/memorial in Hiroshima a few years ago- and saw the evidence of the suffering of the Japanese residents from the bomb. Horrible experience for the civilians because of the fanatical actions of their leaders in starting the war.
I also knew a man (former US Navy) who was taken prisoner on Dec 10 (?) on Guam, 1941 and survived the Japanese prison POW system for over three and a half years. He said that they were told daily by the guards -near the end - that ALL allied prisoners would be shot once the first American troops stepped foot on the main islands.
Also of course the millions of Japanese and hundreds of thousands US troops that would have been killed by a conventional conquest....
