Most PWs have a mixture of parts, nuts and bolts that owners have used with no originality as a concern, they used what worked. I would use flat & lock washers and a grade 5 cadmium or zinc plated nut.
The Castle Nut is used on high vibration applications where a secure lock is not possible, and the nut you have was probably what was convenient and available for the owner at the time.
