Hey Vaughn, you beat me to it. Thanks. And thanks to Phil for generously hosting compiled information on his site.

One problem I have with seals that are thinner than originals is that there is usually a shoulder at the bottom of the bore that the seal is pressed in against. With the old thick seals, no problem, just press them in as far as they will go. With new thin seals it can be hard to get them in straight to the bore unless they are pressed all the way to the bottom. Makes it hard to get a seal in straight if one is trying to avoid the "groove" that may be worn into the shaft.

Also I find that modern, single wall, non-reinforced, thin, single lip seals tend to be quite flimsy and require a tool of the correct diameter to install them without distorting them. With the old, double wall, reinforced, thick, double lip seals just drive them in with any old thing that will work (even just a hammer) and they seat right into place.

We should give our thanks to modern conveniences I guess.....
