We have quite a bit of bigger beech. They all vary on how hard they split. When you get what I call a wavy grain beech(pic) you can forget splitting by hand. Even starting wedges will require a saw cut. There is no rhyme or reason to it either as we have had trees the same size growing next to each other and was was wavy and the other split easy.
