I just did this on a CJ7 Jeep.
I took the shifter out of the tower, and bent it cold (without heat). I used my receiver hitch on my truck as a holder, and slid a short pipe over the shift lever to gently bend it. I needed two bends to shape it the way I wanted. After a few test fits and some tweaking, it was perfect. I reassembled everything and have been using it since.
