As with every Gov., or Terrorist Group, or radical left/right wing group, there is someone in line to take over that has the same mind set and goals. Cutting the head of the snake off doesn't end it, it just grows another head. You have to threaten with a willingness to use force, strength, and control using death if needed, just like they do with there people, it's what they understand.
Putin loves his Russia, and Russians love their women and vodka. I would be surprised if he would jeopardize that although he is pushing the envelop. Now if Putin is physically sick with a terminal illness, perhaps.
