Also check that the needle is not touching the face of the gauge. If it is, check the tiny screws that hold the face in place to see if they are loose. You can also push very lightly on the face to move it away from the needle if necessary. I have worked on these gauges a couple of times cleaning contacts, replacing faces and repairing winding wires that came loose. They are not had to work with just take your time.
