It could have been a replacement engine (crate) which may never had a number stamped into the block. There are ways to recover the serial number with chemicals. It is often done on guns where the serial number was ground off. Look at utube I found a video on how to do it.
It should be reasonably obvious if the serial number was ground off. There should be grinder marks that are visible on the serial number pad.
