Engines and motors are designed to convert one or more forms of energy into mechanical energy. The automotive, rail, airplane, Shipping industries, etc., have adopted the term "Engine" to mean any mechanical device that uses fuel or steam to generate mechanical energy. The term "motor" has been adopted by the electrical industry to mean any mechanical device that uses electricity to generate mechanical energy. This is to distinguish between the to systems. Although both engine and motor have been applied to describe the internal combustion engine, the proper name is "engine" to distinguish it from an electric motor used in your vehicle.
