I had an engineering professor who told me that an engine is the correct name for the internal combustion device that propels most vehicles (virtually all vehicles at that time - nearly 30 years ago), while a motor runs on electricity. So I challenged him by pointing out auto manufacturers with "motor" in the company name, such as Ford Motor Company, Nissan Motor Company, etc., and asked him if they were all incorrect in their company naming (thinking that they surely weren't incorrect), and he said that basically, yes, they were incorrect.
