It depends on a lot of factors. If your going to do all the work you will save a ton of money. Labor rates around here are $150+ per hour.

Choice of engine and trans will determine if you have to alter the sheet metal. That’s time and money if needed. Then think about adaptors and engine mounts. Will you need an overdrive since the gear ratios are so low in these trucks. You will probably have to change axle ratios on top of the overdrive. Will the transplant require steering box or brake system changes. I would suggest front disk brakes if your going be doing higher speeds.

At 60mph your going to be turning 3000rpm with 4.89 gears, 36” tires and a direct drive transmission (no overdrive). Diesels won’t do that.

Your going to be spending 10s of thousands dollars. To put a diesel in.

It would be a lot cheaper to put in a V8 as they can do the 3000 rpm all day. Conversation costs will be a lot less with a V8.
