In the WWII 3/4 ton manual, it instructs you to use 1 pound of grease to coat the universals when re-installing the front drive axles. Hub bearings are only repacked. Hubs are a roughly annual inspection item on a WWII military vehicle, so bearings would be repacked when this occurred. Also, a friend who was an artillery battalion motor pool master sergeant told me that one of his biggest repetitive jobs during the war was pulling hubs on all 225 vehicles after every beach landing they did (he was PTO in the 25th Infantry Division).
