Another reason to use studs is because they make it easier to custom-fit brackets in any location on top of the head. For example, you can test-fit brackets for dual carbs in different locations till you get the setup that works the best. Or you can fit other accessories. This only works if the studs are long enough to accommodate two nuts plus the thickness of whatever bracket might go between the two nuts.
