If the temperature needle only gets up to 1/4 of the gage range, then that sounds too cold.
An engine needs to get up to a certain temperature to help condensation evaporate out of the engine. Otherwise, moisture will accumulate, mix with the oil, start to create sludge, and can damage or shorten the life of the engine. Even if the engine seems to be running well, I would strongly consider putting a coreect thermostat in there.
