Good advice, Vaughn.
I think the last "option" is probably the best.
There are a lot of hacks out there and your advice could help him avoid getting burned.
Additionally, I would be very careful of the "It ran when I parked it a few years ago" line also, unless the asking price is low enough to leave room in the budget for a complete rebuild.
