History and Description:
Vintage Dodge Power Wagon, 4x4. This is 1966 Dodge W300 1 ton chassis. My father bought this from Co-op for salvage. When he got it home he found out that it didn't require much to work to actually make it operable. He then decided to use it in our used heavy truck parts yard to retrieve parts. It was a blast to drive, and we couldn't wait to be sent out after another part to retrieve. The original truck cab was yellow and very rusty. He bought this in the 1970's. He did NOT get a title with this truck as he thought it was going to be cut up for iron anyway. As things developed, he decided that it worked so well that we should try to make it a better unit. It was never driven by us on the public roads, because it wasn't licensed.
By the late 1980's, he had found a 1969 D300 cab and chassis with a bad motor that had a good title. He repaired the cab areas that typically rust out on these trucks. The rocker step areas are repaired with extra heavy floor plate material. The truck frame has been doubled with a 9' full C channel frame. This starts at the rear of the front leaf spring hanger and continues to the center of the rear axle. The truck was also repainted white.
The engine had the bottom end new main bearing rolled in replacements and new rod bearings done in the chassis. The rear axle hubs have factory spacers to make it a single tire axle rear. It appears that it could be a dually if these were removed. He added power steering to the unit and dual fuel tanks. This unit was not intended to be a show truck, it was going to be a daily driver.
He used this as a fill in project to keep the guys busy so that there were no layoffs in slower times. As things worked out, the slower times ended and the business flourished and he never looked back. Unfortunately for the Dodge power wagon, it got parked in a storage building and never saw the light of day until now, approximately 30 years later. My father passed away 23 years ago. It is just one of those things that slipped through the cracks of life. The property that the building is on is sold now and this has spurred us to sell this unit to a good home. Hopefully a Power Wagon enthusiast that will finish the job and enjoy this truck.
This truck does not run now. I don't want to try and start it and possibly damage the engine. Someone that has that experience should be the one to do that. I know that the brakes and other items were repaired at that time. But that is a long time for it to sit and I just don't know if they will work properly. The title that came with the 1969 cab had been put in my mother's name and is good, and will be transferred to the buyer. Dad did keep the original 1966 VIN plate and mounted in the cab next to the VIN plate of the 1969 cab.
I know it is sad that he didn't get the original title for the chassis, but it is what it is.
