I've got a '56 flat fender and blasted and painted the rims in the mid 70's. At that time I noticed that the heavy rust was around the split ring to rim area and around the valve stem. I experimented--put silicone around the valve stem slot in the rim (flap side) (valve in rim slot-tire cocked up) and silicone around the rim lip for the split rim (tire down on rim). Also had liberally sprinkled baby powder (corn starch) on the inside of the tire and on the flap (rim side) recomendation from an old timer. Just put 5 new STA's on (25 years later) and tires came off with little effort--I have an old bead breaker sledge and let it hit the rubber first on it's way under the ring. NO RUST on the rims--tubes and flaps came out easily. I may be breaking some basic rule of split rims BUT I put clear silicone back on them. Also when refilling tires with air I use a locking chuck and step away from the wheel!!
