Plan to take your time. Try to avoid the tire guy with the big tire maul - All they do is destroy your rims.
There are very few folks working tires these days who REALLY know how to do split rims. The ones who think they do can (will) a lot of damage to the rim.If you find someone who does good work on split rims their work is worth the $20 per tire to not have your rims busted or bent or worse - damaged so the ring comes off.

If you really plan to dismount your own:
If the tire is an old bias ply tire - 10 ply and heavy - you are in for a lot of work - just plan on it..... Radials are a lot less work as the bead is more flexible.
Buy 2 tire spoons and a ring tool. You need the ring tool to pry the ring open. You need the spoons to pry the ring off the rim.
I have seen a portable bead breaker available on the net but I have lost the url. It was from Australia.

You will also need a 15 foot tow chain.
I use a wood block, a length of 1/4 plate steel, my hi lift jack and the PW bumper to break the bead. I force one end of the steel plate into the bead. The other end of the steel place I place on the wood block. The wood block acts as a pivot point for the steel plate.I use a hilift jack to force the steel plate down, forcing the tire bead down.

1. Deflate the tire
2. Break the tire bead loose from the rim, front and back, completely around the tire. You have to work your way around the rim slowly pressing the bead loose.
3. CAREFULLY remove the ring - I wear leather gloves to avoid pinches, slivers or cuts. Ply the ring ONLY ENOUGH to remove the ring.
4. CLEAN the ring and rim of rust.
5.Put the tube and tube protector in the tire
6 mount the tire
7 CAREFULLY remount the ring. Inspect the ring and rim fit! The fit should be without much gap at the ring ends.
8 Thread the chain around the wheel rim and tire so the ring CAN NOT ESCAPE if anything goes wrong.Stay away from the face of the rim/tire. Try to keep you hands and head away from the rim/tire face.Once you start adding air.
9. Take a minute to check everything again!!!
10 put 5 pounds of air in and check everything AGAIN - DO NOT TOUCH THE TIRE OR RING! If there is a problem LET THE AIR OUT BEFORE doing anything!!!!!
If everything is ok inflate add 5 pounds more and repeat the checks. Once the pressure is up you are done.
The bead should seat at about 15 psi on the old style rims.
The new style rims require between 30 and 65 psi to seat the bead. They scare me way too much to use the new style split rims.

PLAN TO TAKE YOUR TIME. When you take the time to be careful you should have no problems. If you get in a hurry trouble happens and with split rims it gets very very bad. There is a lot of energy stored in those tires.
Good luck
oscar
