The 318A is the Poly, the change to the 318LA was made in 1967. If your heads are "scolloped" you have an "A", if the valve covers are a conventional rectangle you have an "LA". There was a 1, 2 & 3, the 3 was the premium engine. It was made for D/W 300's and heavy abuse, you know, a work truck! It could be special ordered for D/W 200's also.
1's had solid lifters, 2's and 3's had hydraulics. 2's and 3's held one more quart of oil. 1's and 2's were higher compression, 3's were .75 to 1 lower compression. 1's had regular timing chains, 2's and 3's had roller chains. 3's had harder valves, for more lugging I assume. I have no idea if NAPA thinks the HD is also the 3 but I'd guess so. I'd send you a copy of the 318 specs but my book only goes up to 66. I do not have info on those new fangled 67's! The 2 was a hybrid of both features of the 1 & 3 and is very rare and was discontinued to cut down on overhead.
