It looks like the major problem with this system definitely is tthe ammeter, I have a lot of friends with the same vehicles that end up cooking wiring harnesses because of 2 things; first is as Allen P noted & that is the + & - 10guage wires running through the bulk-head coming from the starter relay, which goes directly(both + & - wires Black & red) to the ammeter, then it goes back out through the bulk-head directly to the alternator. whew, thats a mouthful. The way that has solved alot of these problems for my-self & alot of my friends is to run new wire directly from the starter relay in a loop back to the alternator with an inline 30 amp fuse in-between, for a guage you have to surface mount a voltmeter. again I have the ambulance version of that truck , with lots of electrical accesories (hate to day it but even an amplifier & bass system) & I have no problems with this set-up , even with the stock 50 amp alternator!!!
