I have a 96 2500 Van and trans caused problems at 75000. When towing, it would sometimes apparently not pump enough fluid to the torque converter and thus would race the engine and barely move.
I had and extended warranty and the trans was replaced. These cost about $2000 installed but come with a 30,000 mile warranty. I also replaced the check valve that is mentioned in later posts, this was causing the same problem to occur on startup because the check valve was leaking the fluid out.
Anyway, all is well now.
