I bought a car last year that had been sitting in a garage for at least 5 years untouched (73 Camaro with 40k miles on a rebuilt 350). I cyphoned 10 gallons of the old "stinkin" gas out of the tank with one of those hand suction pumps and placed 5 gallons of new 91 octane in the tank. I replaced the oil & filter, air cleaner, added a new battery, aired up the tires, checked the coolant level, spark plugs, and points, and sprayed a little starting ether in the carb, and wallah ! Vrooom, cough, hickup, cough... ran well enough to get up the driveway hill and to a nearby gas station where I filled up the tank and rechecked everything for leaks. Got immediately up onto the freeway and within a couple of miles or so it smoothed right out and has run like a champ ever since. Best starting older car I have ever had... never fails on the first click! I know in your case the "freeway run" probably isn't an option :) Good Luck!
