coils are grounded through the points and condenser. The can doesn't need to be grounded.I think Pat's already fixed his problem, it was loose and dirty battery cables, otherwise I wouldn't have given him a flip answer the first time. And yes, ground faults can cause all kinds of wireing bugaboos, especially in a lighting harness where a bad ground will send electricity to ground through the other filament in the bulb, causing other bulbs in the system to glow. And on Chrysler products, the electronic voltage regulators DO NEED a ground, a star washer will fix lots of charging problems.

And HEY PAT- you don't have clamp on ends on your cables, do you? They let LOTS of corrosion into the cables and are a very poor savings over new cables. Replace with new cables, if the previous owner got cheeap.
