Oooo, you're thorough (this is a good thing). Yes, the new pin allows easy movement through all gears with VERY little slop in the shift lever.
It's a more complicated arrangement than the original: I used a woodruff key cutter to machine out the slot in the shift lever ball so that most of the wear divots were gone. The hole for the pin in the shift tower was threaded to 5/16 NC. The original pin is replaced by a three piece assembly; a shoe with flat sides that slides in the ball slot and pivots on the threaded pin, a threaded pin (5/16 NC), and a lock nut. The threaded pin is held in place with the lock nut on the outside of the tower. By replacing the original pin with a shoe, force is distributed over flat surfaces rather than on a line, so wear should be dramatically reduced. Having the pin held rigidly in place with the lock nut also reduced slop. The downside is that it’s a relatively complex solution than a simple pin and requires machining abilities to implement.
