Or fill with water and freeze if it is copper or soft metal keeping a round end product
The skills of craftsman is in the small details, as well as canceling errors to be not noticeable
It's like steam bending wood bows
If you just bend your steam softened wood around a shape you can get stress crack/splits on the outer radius, due to stretching outer fibers
If you block the ends causing the inter fibers to be in compression, it will almost never split/crack, giving a much stronger bow as well
