270 hemi in FFPW

I put a 270 hemi in my 65 FFPW by using a bell housing from a 315 motor to bolt up to original 420 tranny. Once and awhile i would hear a bad noise in the bell housing but would quit. The other day my starter quit working. I took the lower inspection plate off and looks like the starter gear has marks on it from the ring gear. I am wondering if the starter was staying engaged making this noise eventyally and taking out my starter??? Anyone have a good starter that would be the correct fit for this combo?? Please let me know. Thanks
