I've even carried 2500 lbs of gravel in my F150 more than once, which is quite a bit higher than the 1800-lb weight capacity that I derived from subtracting the empty weight from the max GW, and certainly much more than the 1000 lbs that someone would assume based on its nominal rating of 1/2-ton, and it handled it just fine.
Most trucks will handle quite a bit of extra weight now and then; it's when people start doing it on a regular basis that it starts breaking or wearing things out.
