That was a good explanation. Another telltale, not necessarily in all cases but applicable when comparing 1/2-ton and 3/4-ton military Dodges to the 1-ton Power-Wagon, that is good enough for reference is that the 1/2-ton Dodges had the smallest cargo box of the three. The 3/4-ton box was larger. And the 1-ton box the largest of the three. The 1-1/2-ton WC also added an additional rear axle.
I agree on the carrying of 2-tons. I have had my WDX loaded past capacity on several occasions. Once was with railroad ties stacked to the top of the cab, another was with freshly dug black dirt to the top of the bed sides, and the first was with gravel from the quarry to the top of the bed sides. Both the dirt and the gravel made the rear of the truck squat far enough for the frame pads to contact the rear axle housing. I crossed the quarry scale with, and paid for, 3 tons of river rock aboard. I was overloaded but not by choice and I was not traveling far.
There is a lot of travel in the rear suspension of a 1-ton Power-Wagon. That was by design as well as the rubber frame-to-axle pads.
